《2025年评优监测课时作业八年级英语上册译林版》

Do you ever stand in front of rubbish bins, unsure if the waste in your hand is recyclable?
Four Hong Kong high school students invented a smart bin called Waste Collection Point to solve this.
Connected to a computer, the bin uses a camera to tell the kind of the waste it receives and sorts it into plastic, paper, glass, or other kinds. To make sure the bin can sort waste correctly, the team tested every product( 产品 ) in the school shop and took at least 500 pictures of each one. “To train the AI, we had to take many photos from different angles( 角度), so it has a better rate of accuracy,” said one of the students who built the AI system.
The idea came to them two years ago, when many people crowded into their village and left lots of rubbish, causing pollution. “Bins overflowed, and there was rubbish on the mountain,” the students said. They joined villagers in cleaning up every weekend.
To encourage environmental protection, they decided to create the special bin that would encourage people to protect the environment. After school ended at 2 p.m., they worked on it until 6 or 7 p.m. Even when school closed, they met online to continue.
“Our bin is now in its third generation( 代 ). We hope it’ll be widely used in the city before we finish university,” the students said. “Then recycling will be easier, and we can better protect the environment.”
