With nearly a quarter of global greenhouse gases coming from all types of transportation, can we keep ourselves off gas-powered vehicles to avoid the worst effects? As more governments take urgent action on climate change, quite a few companies are betting their future—that millions of consumers are finally ready for electricity-powered vehicles. Modern battery-powered cars are selling fast and zero-emission planes are coming. These changes, both leading to a more sustainable future, are reinventing how we get from here to there.
Cars and trucks have been undergoing their greatest improvement since the automobile's existence more than a century ago. Almost overnight, the era of the electric car has arrived. Electricity has the advantage that it works without the unpleasant smell and with less noise. Global annual sales of electric vehicles are expected to soar from just over 3 million today to 14 million by 2025. Just a month after Ford unveiled an electric version of the popular F-150, customers have reserved more than 100,000 of them. The price is about $10,000 above the gas-powered one, but Ford says the electric model will cost much less to maintain. Everything creating a green revolution on the ground is of limited help in the sky for the time being.
High-storage batteries are useless at present when it comes to the technological challenge of launching a few hundred people into the sky and carrying them thousands of miles. No battery yet invented can power, say, a Boeing 747 from New York to London. Promising improvements, however, do add up. Developments of zero-emission, battery-powered electric engines are already happening in commercial flights, involving trips of limited duration and distance. Airlines specializing in short journeys with small planes will lead the way to electric flights.
Our planet's health depends on zeroing out carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, and yet, by the timetable needed to address climate challenge, the shift away from gas-powered vehicles remains far too slow. Nevertheless, the train has left the station. Someday, electricity-powered transportation will be as common as air.

根据文章第三段的最后一句“Airlines specializing in short journeys with small planes will lead the way to electric flights.”
根据文章最后一段的最后一句 “Someday, electricity-powered transportation will be as common as air”可知,电动交通工具的使用已经起航,在未来电动交通将和飞机一样普遍。

A. flowers 花; B. seeds 种子;C. trees 树;D. vegetables 蔬菜。根据前文 “she brought home four tiny twigs one day”可知此处指的是小树苗。
A. life 生活、生命;B. hope 希望;C. chance 机会; D. end 结束。
根据空格后“brought an end to three of them”可知树苗生长的土壤并不好。
A. left 留下;B. gone 离开; C. deserted 遗弃;D. planted 种植。根据前文“brought an end to three of them”可知目前只剩下一棵。
A. turned 转向;B. bent 弯曲;C. sank 沉下去;D. flew 飞。根据前文 “It never got very tall”和下文“The lower branches were becoming brown”可知这个树是树枝弯曲着长开,并不是向高长。
A. take 拿、携带; B. lose 丢失;C. grow 长大;D. die 死。根据下文“The lower branches were becoming brown. Only the top ones were 7 .I did my best to 8 it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer(肥料), but it seemed hopeless.”

A.however 然而;B.therefore 因此;C.moreover 并且,而且; D.otherwise 否则。分析句子“As I walked over to take a closer look at it”和句子“I noticed something moving among the branches”的句意,可知两者之间有转折关系。
