Prescription drugs (处方药)

Prescription drugs are medicine that you can only get with a doctor's permission (许可). This means a doctor needs to check you first and decide which medicine is the best and how much of the medicine should be taken. When you take any prescription drug, you must carefully follow the doctor's instructions. Taking too little of the medicine will not improve your body's condition, but taking too much can have a bad influence (影响) on you.
Over-the-counter drugs (非处方药)

If you've ever been in a drug store, you've seen many kinds of drugs with the sign "OTC" on the packaging (外包装). These drugs are over-the-counter drugs and they can be bought without a doctor's prescription. These drugs are usually used to treat common problems like headaches or colds. They are safe for most people to use, but it's important to read the instructions carefully and ask an adult before taking them, especially if you're a kid.
Many drugs can cause side effects (副作用). A side effect can be good or bad, but it isn't what the medicine or treatment is supposed to cause. For example, a side effect of some cold medicine is sleepiness. Some drugs might cause nausea (呕吐) if they are not taken with food. Tell a parent or other adults if you have a side effect after taking a drug. Your doctor might suggest another drug to use instead.
