Ⅰ. 阅读理解。
A
Yangzhou is a cultural city with a long history of about 2,500 years. There were three golden times in the history of Yangzhou. It took shape in the Han Dynasty, developed in the Tang Dynasty, and reached its top in the Qing Dynasty.
Lots of famous people travelled there and left many poems describing the beauty of Yangzhou. Li Bai once sailed down the Yangtze River to Yangzhou to see off his friend, and wrote a poem. Xu Ning praised Yangzhou in his poem for its “two thirds of the natural beauty under heaven”. Du Mu's poem, The Twenty-Four Bridges shined in the bright moonlight made the Twenty-Four Bridges well-known.
In history, Yangzhou was a famous and open city. In the Tang Dynasty, it is the biggest city in Southeast China. Over 10 thousand foreign traders lived in Yangzhou then. Jianzhen, from the Daming Temple in Yangzhou, went to Japan to spread Chinese culture. When he passed away, his sculpture(雕像) has been preserved(保存) in Japan as a state treasure. Marco Polo, the well-known Italian traveller, once stayed in the city. His Travels of Marco Polo gives lots of descriptions of Yangzhou.
Yangzhou culture is a window of the culture of our nation. Now, the people of Yangzhou are working together to make the city more beautiful.

Maybe you have heard of some volunteer activities like planting trees, cleaning up the community and looking after the old people. But do you know what is volunteer travel? It is a new and popular volunteer activity among young people.
The main purpose of volunteer travel is to take part in service activities to help others. During the trip, volunteer travellers often provide services like teaching, cooking, animal caring and cultural activities. The volunteers may get free or cheaper accommodation(住处) and meals because of their help.
It seems that these long journeys could only be made possible in recent years by modern transport. However, volunteer travel started in the 1960s when Alec Dickson and his wife Mora from the UK founded Voluntary Service Overseas(VSO), an international volunteer organization.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. But so far, more volunteer trips have taken place in the volunteers' own countries. Volunteer projects in the countryside are now attracting(吸引) more visitors living in the cities.
By doing voluntary work while travelling, travellers may make a real and positive(积极的) influence on the world. The services volunteers provide can reduce the costs for the communities they serve. Another advantage of volunteer travel is that it helps people living in cities experience the life in the countryside. For those who are tired of city life but can't move to the countryside, volunteer travel can be a way. In this way, travellers have a chance to relax themselves from their busy lives.
