Ghosts of our loved ones
Many people think things like ghosts and death are scary. But in fact, we have a festival celebrating these things.
Every year, on the 15th day of the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar, we celebrate the Zhongyuan Festival, or the Ghost Festival. It is on September 6th in 2025. On this day, families light lanterns to miss dead people and wish for good luck. But at the same time, living people don’t want to stay out at night during the Ghost Festival. They believe it’s bad for their health.
The Ghost Festival and the Qingming Festival are both holidays that honor the dead. During the Ghost Festival, all the dead people are honored. But we only honor our dead family members at the Qingming Festival.
