答案:
4. learn the new 5. famous for; famous as
Socrates (苏格拉底) was a great thinker and teacher. One day, he said to his students, “Today you are going to learn new exercise, swinging (摆动) arms forward and then backward.”
He told his students how to do the exercise. Then he asked his students to swing their arms 300 times every day. “Do you think you can do it?” Socrates asked the students. They laughed and said, “Of course. It is not difficult”. So all the students told Socrates that they would do the exercise every day.
A month later, Socrates asked his students, “Which of you do the exercise every day?” Everyone put up his hand. Socrates was happy that all the students did it.
Another month went by. He asked the students the same question, but only 80% of the students put up their hands. A year went by, and Socrates asked the students the question again. But this time, only one student put up his hand. The student was Plato (柏拉图). He became a great thinker later.
Well, doing one thing is easy but doing one thing every day is not an easy thing. That’s why some people can succeed (成功) but some can’t.
1. What did Socrates ask his students to do every day?
2. What did his students think of swinging arms?
