When Yuan Janglei graduated from college in 2014 in Southwest China,he decided to go to the West - African country of Benin to be a volunteer teacher. After two years’ teaching Chinese in Benin,one of the poorest countries in Africa,he made another big decision:to return home to China on a bicycle.
In September,2016,Yuan set out on the journey,a journey that would cover about 16,000 kilometers across 16 different countries in nearly a year.
“It was an easy decision for me,” said Yuan,“because I wanted to see the world,to live a great story and to tell my own story.”
However,it turned out to be a hard journey,though Yuan enjoyed amazing natural beauty and met many friendly people. There were several times on the road when he questioned what he was doing.
According to Yuan,many local people helped him along the way. Even though they spoke different languages,they had no difficulty communicating with smiles or simple greetings. When he was cycling in Burkina Faso,Yuan got serious malaria(疟疾). The locals hurriedly sent him to hospital on a motorcycle.
Yuan’s bicycle journey wasn’t just about seeing the world. Through the journey,Yuan raised about 100,000 yuan. He planned to use it to build solar power stations and water wells(太阳能发电站和水井) for communities in Benin.
