Liang Qianjuan, who was born in a village in Longnan, Gansu Province, dropped out of school after finishing middle school. Because her family is poor, she had no choice but to become a worker.
After more than a decade in Guangdong, where she learned to use a computer to deal with difficult work, Liang felt it was time to return to her hometown and run an online store.
“At first, the store only sold my family’s walnuts (胡桃),” she said. “But as the store became more popular, I decided to put products planted by villagers on the main page of my online store.” More than 400 villagers are now supplying their products to Liang, with over 100 of them from poor families.
“Local specialties such as honey, dried long beans and eggs used to only be seen on our dining tables,” she said. “But now we can sell them to people in cities thousands of kilometers away. E-commerce (电子商务) has also become a key way to help the poor out of poverty,” Liang said.
At the ongoing second meeting of the 13th NPC, Liang suggested that a logistics (物流) center be built in Longnan, which is now home to more than 10,000 online stores, so that more local specialties from mountainous areas can be sold. Liang also called for more policies to help poor areas sell their specialties online. “As an NPC deputy (人大代表), I feel proud to contribute (作贡献) to the development of my hometown,” Liang said. “I hope more people can pay attention to the specialties in poor areas, and that more specialties can be sent out of mountainous areas, allowing my villagers to lead rich lives.”
