Abing wasborn in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, in 1893. When he was very young, his mother died. His father taught him to play musicalinstruments, such as the drums, *dizi* and *erhu*. He wasknown for his musical ability by age 17. He developed a serious illness and became blind. He had no home and lived on the streets for several years. He continued to sing and play on the streets. Abing could play over 600 piecesofmusic by the end of his life. Today, Abing's *Erquan Yingyue* is a piece which is played and praised by all the great *erhu* masters. It has become one of China's national treasures. It makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own sad or painful experiences.
