三 新素养 文化意识 阅读短文,选择正确的答案。
Six hundred years ago, a restaurant was not a place. It was a thin soup. People in France would cook ham or chicken in a kettle with water, vegetables and spices(调味料). If your stomach hurt, these soups would help you feel better.
In 1766, Mathurin Roze de Chantoiseau opened House of Health in Paris. He invented the restaurant. At first, he just wanted to create(创造) a place where people could gather, eat well, share ideas, and do business. As these "meeting and eating" spots became popular, they turned into restaurants—places with fancy menus, private (私人的) tables, and polite waiters. But restaurants could only be found in Paris. It took about 75 years for restaurants to appear in other European(欧洲的) countries and the United States.
Before restaurants opened in the United States, people ate at taverns(酒馆) or inns. They are places where people could sleep, eat, drink, and dance. Food was served in family style on big plates. In the 1830s, the brothers John and Pietro Delmonico from Switzerland brought the first real restaurant to the US. They opened Delmonico's. Eventually(最终), many more Delmonico's restaurants opened in New York City.
France not only brought us a simple soup and a place to eat, but also taught us how to cook. Even the white apron(围裙) and tall chef's hat were originally designed in France.
