The month of June arrives and the weather changes. It rains without stopping for three days, and it’s very, very cold.
On the evening of the third day, Robert asks, “Can we light a fire, Mother?”
“No, dear,” Mother answers. “It’s summer, and coal is expensive. We can’t afford to have fires in summer even though the evenings are cold.”
At teatime that same day, Phyllis wants to put butter and jam on her bread, but Mother doesn’t allow it.
“You can have jam or butter,” she says. “You can’t have both. We can’t afford it.”
One day, children go to play in the railway station and find there are piles of coal between the rails. The piles have white lines on them.
A porter comes out of his room, and Peter asks him politely, “What are the white lines for on the piles of coal?”
“They show me how much coal there is,” the porter says. “So don’t steal any.”
The children think the porter is joking because he seems to be a friendly man.
Two days later in the evening when it is dark, the children go to the station. They fill the pram with coal and push it home. They empty the coal into the place where Mother keeps her coal. They do this twice and are doing it the third time when the station master jumps out from behind a truck. He wants to send them to the police station. However, the kind master lets them go home after he knows the reason.
