Reagan Bischoff created a video channel called Throw Leftie. On it, she shares creative solutions to everyday tasks that are more difficult because of her cerebral palsy (大脑性瘫痪).
How does having cerebral palsy make you think out of the box?
My brain has trouble talking to my muscles. It causes me not to feel my hand and foot completely on my left side. There are many things that are hard for me, like putting my hair in a ponytail (马尾辫), putting in earrings, tying shoes, and cutting food. My mum taught me a phrase: I will try, but I might need help. I still get frustrated when I can't do anything, but I'm always determined to figure it out.
What inspired you to create your video channel?
As I became more independent, I would search for new ways to do things that were difficult. I realized many people had the same challenges and that these solutions could help them too. The video channel allows me to share what I've discovered.
How did you come up with the name Throw Leftie?
When you play lacrosse (长曲棍球), it's important to switch sides to get around defenders. My coaches would always tell me, "Throw leftie! Throw leftie!" But I couldn't. So I found a way to play lacrosse by playing as goalkeepers. I don't have to switch hands or run as much in that position, but it lets me do something I love.
Do you connect with your viewers?
Many parents who watched my channel asked if their daughters could meet me because they don't know anyone else who has cerebral palsy. It's hard to feel like no one understands you. Once a month, I invite about 26 girls to calls. Sometimes we talk about things that are hard and get advice from each other. Sometimes we chat about school and things we like doing. It's nice to find other things we have in common.
