Decades ago, satellites first started looking down at the Antarctic Peninsula. They only saw a few small areas of vegetation(植被). These plants covered a total of about 740 square metres—less than a football field.
Since then, however, the region has been turning green quickly. A new study shows that mosses(苔藓) have taken up over 10 million square metres. That's nearly four times the size of New York's Central Park!
The study was based on satellite images from 1986 to 2021. It shows that the greening has sped up by 30 per cent since 2016. That's fast enough to cover nearly 75 football fields per year. "Our findings show that the impact of climate change has no limit in its reach," said Thomas Roland, co-author of the study.
The Antarctic is the coldest place on the earth. But it has recently been troubled by extreme heat events. This summer, a record-breaking heat wave hit parts of the continent. Temperatures were about 10℃ higher than normal in July.
As the planet heats up, Antarctica will keep on warming, the scientists say. That is to say, the greening happens faster.
The more the peninsula greens, the more soil will form. Invasive plants will take root in the region. Antarctica's native wildlife and ecosystem can be in danger as a result.
"Seeds can readily find their way on the boots of tourists and researchers. They may also arrive through more traditional routes(途径)—birds and the wind," Roland said.
The plant cover could reduce the Antarctic's ability to reflect the sun's heat energy back into space. That's because darker surfaces take in more heat.
"At present, the Antarctic landscape is still almost all snow, ice and rock. In the long run, however, the impacts could help further promote the growth of plants as the climate continues to warm. The landscape on the continent could be changed forever," said another study author.

B. The temperature in Antarctica is becoming higher all year round.
C. Any kind of plant is able to survive very well in Antarctica.
D. Only people are able to bring plant seeds to Antarctica.
( )3. The underlined word "readily" here is similar to "____".
A. really B. nearly C. easily D. slowly
( )4. From another study author we can infer that ____.
A. the darker the surface is, the less heat it needs
B. the Antarctic landscape will be all snow forever
C. warm climate will change the Antarctic landscape
D. there will be no snow, ice or rock in Antarctica
( )5. What's the best title for the passage?
A. The temperature is becoming lower
