People around the UK came together to welcome the Chinese Lunar New Year, which began on 29 January this year.
In the Chinese zodiac, 2025 marks the Year of the Snake. East and Southeast Asian communities led public celebrations around the UK.
On 29 January, thousands gathered in London's Chinatown to watch the annual new year parade, featuring dragons, lion dancers, colourful costumes and dozens of fantastic floats(彩车). The event is thought to be the largest Lunar New Year celebration outside Asia, attracting about 500,000 people. London's mayor Sadiq Khan said, “I'd like to thank East and Southeast Asian Londoners for your great contributions to our capital. You've played and continued to play an important role in making London a lively and inclusive(包容的) city.”
Liverpool, home to Europe's most famous and ancient Chinese community, was decorated with red lanterns. Celebrations included dragon, lion and unicorn(独角兽) parades, live music and firecrackers. The event included a wildflower garden featuring more than 1,000 flowers made by children.
Zi Lan Liao, from Chinese organization Pagoda Arts, told reporters, “The Lunar New Year is a children's day because we have lots of presents, lots of good food and lots of lucky money for them.”
In Newport, Wales, a 15-metre green snake model was carried through the city on poles. In Edinburgh, a concert brought together Scottish and Chinese culture, featuring dancing and music from the Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra(交响乐团). In Northern Ireland, Belfast's Ulster Hall hosted Chinese cook shows and a day of dance, music and celebrations.
