This year is "the Year of the Snake". It is also called "the Year of the Small Dragon" in Chinese culture. This nickname shows there are many similarities between snakes and dragons. The dragon's body is that of a big snake. For this reason, many people believe that the image(形象) of the dragon came from the snake.
The Year of the Snake holds special meaning in Chinese culture. The snake in Chinese mythology(神话) is often connected with wisdom, intelligence and mystery. It is a complex and fascinating creature. People born in the Year of the Snake are believed to be attractive, understanding and knowledgeable.
Snakes can be seen in many old Chinese stories. In Chinese mythology, Fu Xi was one of the ancestors(祖先) of the Chinese people. And his younger sister Nv Wa created humans from clay. Both of them had snake bodies and human heads. Shanhaijing, or The Classic of Mountains and Seas, tells stories about gods and goddesses. Many of them have something to do with snakes. For example, the four gods of the sea all wore snakes as earrings(耳饰). They also travelled on snakes.
Snakes have shown up in many folk stories too. One famous story is called The Legend of the White Snake. In this story, a magical snake named Bai Suzhen fell in love with a man named Xu Xian. And they quickly got married. Bai Suzhen is pictured as a kind and beautiful character.
