In China, mobile payments are mainly done through QR codes. But Alipay is trying to change this with Tap!, a new contactless payment function. Six months after its launch(上市), it’s still not clear if people will start using it instead of QR codes.

Tap! uses NFC technology. Shoppers can pay just by putting their phones near a special reader, unlike scanning QR codes. ▲, but past attempts to bring other payment ways like face recognition and UnionPay’s QuickPass to China haven’t worked well.
According to a 2023 report, 93% of mobile payments in China use QR codes. To make Tap! popular, Alipay has been promoting it both online and offline since July. They give stores technical support and subsidies(补贴), and offer big discounts to consumers. By early November, Tap! was available in over 1,000 shopping malls in more than 50 cities.
Shan Luhui, a store owner in Shanghai, uses Tap! as Alipay’s team suggested. It makes checkout faster, and customers like the random discounts. However, the money from Tap! payments takes a longer time to reach her account compared to QR code payments, which is a big problem for her business.
Customers like Zhu Yu, a lawyer, find Tap! easy to use, but worry about safety as it allows password-free payments. In fact, to use Tap!, people must unlock a phone, and only those who allow small-amount password-free payments can pay without manual approval(人工批准). Experts say NFC technology used by Tap! is safer than QR codes as the data is encrypted(加密的).
