(C)
Chopsticks, kuaizi, are very important in China. Chinese use them to have meals every day. People can pick up different kinds of food easily with them.
Lily's parents are Chinese. After working in Canada for two years, they live in America with Lily now. It's dinner time. Lily cannot use chopsticks well. When she uses them, they criss-cross(交叉) and make an X. Sometimes she cannot pick up tofu (a traditional Chinese food). Her mother laughs. "Jia Jia," she calls Lily's Chinese name and teaches Lily how to use chopsticks. "zhe yang," she says. It means "like this".
Lily tries again, but it's difficult. She makes a face. "Why should I use chopsticks?" she says and reaches for a fork. Her father says, "It's traditional, Jia Jia." "I like it, but I can't do it well," says Lily. She feels she divorces herself from her family and the traditional culture.
After dinner, she draws a Western dragon and her mother draws a Chinese dragon. Her mother points to the two pictures and says, "Both of them are right. They are from different cultures like forks and chopsticks. No matter where we are, we should understand the culture around us and always remember our own Chinese culture."
