We saw the smoke from far away. “Is that smoke from lava(熔岩)?” I asked the tour guide, Kala. Our tour boat was still far away from the volcano(火山). “Actually, it’s steam(蒸汽),” she said, “Hawaii has a lot of islands that are ancient volcanoes. Some of them still erupt, like this one.”
The boat drew closer, and we could see the lava. It changed from bright red to black as it cooled.
From her pocket, Kala took out a stone and a shiny piece of black glass. “This isn’t the glass from a window. This is volcanic glass. ”
I turned the rock over in my hands and asked, “ ▲?” “The lava becomes new land. That’s how the Hawaiian Islands have grown. When the rock is cool enough, plants will start growing. Old lava forms very good soil. That’s why Hawaii’s farms are so suitable to grow crops.” Dad said, “We thought all volcanoes would break out from time to time.” Kala nodded, “What you say is indeed true. Others, like this one, produce the lava, similar to melted(融化的) chocolate.” “I wouldn’t want that on my ice cream,” I said. Everyone laughed.
