人与社会·文化景观 (2024 河南柘城期末)
The Forbidden City can always take its visitors’ breath away. This year, the world’s largest wooden palace is more than 600 years old! Do you know who made it?
In 1406, when the Ming Yongle Emperor decided to move the country’s capital from Nanjing to Beijing, he started to build a palace in Beijing. It took about a million workers 14 years to finish it.
Materials like Nanmu and stones were sent from other places to Beijing. Nanmu, the most valuable Chinese wood, was used to make huge wooden pillars(柱子). People could only find it deep in forests over 1,800 km away from Beijing. Workers had to float the wood on rivers all the way north to Beijing. Stones were also transported to the palace. The heaviest stone in the Forbidden City is about 250 tons. It was so heavy that people could only move it during winter. They poured water onto the road to create ice. Then thousands of workers pulled the stone on the ice to the palace.

Last summer, I had a chance to visit Beijing with my family. It was a city with a long history, and there were so many interesting places to see!
One of the most exciting places we went to was the Great Wall. We walked along a short part of it called Badaling. Even though it was very crowded, the view from the top was amazing.
Another place that was really beautiful was the Summer Palace. It was a big park with a lake, gardens, and traditional buildings. My favorite part was riding a boat on the lake. The water was so clear, and we could see fish swimming in it.
We also ate some delicious food in Beijing. My favorite was the Peking duck. It was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and was served with a special kind of pancake. We learned how to wrap the duck in the pancake with vegetables and a sauce. It was so yummy!
Shopping in Beijing was also fun. We went to a big market at Wukesong. We bought lots of souvenirs(纪念品) there. I got some cool Chinese knots(中国结) and a fan with a beautiful painting on it.
This trip was truly a fantastic experience for me. I learned a lot about Chinese history, tried delicious new foods, and had a great time with my family.
