There are many charities in the UK. People in London give 2 billion ( 十亿 ) pounds to charity each year. Most people in the UK give money once a month. People usually give money to children, old people, schools and hospitals.
Charity shops pay some people to work in the shops, but other people, who are called volunteers, work there and are not paid. People can give their old clothes, toys, books and other things that they don’t use anymore to charity shops. The volunteers then wash the old clothes to make sure they are clean before selling them.
