Xu Yuanchong is a famous Chinese mod-ern translator. He was born in Nanchang，Jiangxi Province in 1921. He studied under Qian Zhongshu，Wu Mi and other Chinese masters at the National Southwestern Associat-ed University. He went to University of Paris for further study after graduating from Tsing-hua University.
Over the course of a translation career(生涯) lasting more than eighty years，Xu transla-ted about 180 works，including The Book of Songs，The Songs of Chu and The Red and the Black，with a special focus on poetry(诗歌). Xu is also the only person in China who has successfully translated poetry to and from Chi-nese，English and French，in a very precise(准确的) and beautiful way. His works are often chosen as textbooks for foreign language learn-ers.
Xu paid much attention to the beauty of image，sound and form. He would leave some-thing out and add something to make the trans-lated works more beautiful. During his transla-tion career，he was at the centre of many de-bates（辩论）with other translators. But Xu said，“I am not afraid of arguing（争论）be-cause the truth becomes clearer with each de-bate.”
