D
We all know about climate (气候) change and how pollution hurts our planet. We also know that cutting down trees and eating too much meat are not good for the environment. Doing things like recycling paper, sharing car journeys and trying non-meat products can help. But there is another big difference we can make—we can try to make better choices about the things we wear and where we get them from.
Fast fashion (时尚) is a problem. Many people want to wear fashionable clothes without spending a lot of money. Because styles change so often, customers are able to buy clothes cheaply and throw away their “old” ones. Factories produce new clothes quickly and cheaply all the time and these clothes aren’t always very good. The result of this trend is that we produce lots of waste and it often pollutes our environment. We throw away almost 57% of clothing.
But that’s not all. Another key problem with fast fashion is that it wastes far too much water. For example, it takes a lot of water to produce just one cotton shirt. Also, many factories use different chemicals (化学物质) and plastic to help produce clothes more cheaply. When we wash our clothes, these materials enter the water and finally pollute the sea and hurt wildlife.
So what can we do? We need to start thinking more carefully about what we buy and how often we go shopping. It’s better to spend a little bit more money on better materials and then keep those clothes for longer. The clothes we buy should also be more environmentally friendly. For example, they should use natural materials instead of plastic. We can try to be more creative with the clothes we already own. It’s time for change. It’s time to say goodbye to fast fashion.

Last week, Mrs Jones told us there were five secret ways to become confident (自信的) students.
First of all, she said students needed to “think like teachers”. She told us about an interesting experiment (实验). A researcher gave the same information to two different groups of students. The first group had to learn the information for a test. The second group had to learn the information to teach it to someone else. I was surprised that the second group learned better. 31.
Secondly, Mrs Jones said that we had to write down some things we remembered after each lesson. Then, we had to make more notes in the evening.
Mrs Jones said that the third secret was taking tests. Tests aren’t really the end goal of learning. 32.
However, my favourite secret is number four. 33.
And finally, secret five is good for learning vocabulary. When you’re not sure of the meaning of a word on your list, don’t check it immediately. Try to understand the meaning from the context (语境) in which the word is used. 34.
A. Think of things that have to do with it.
B. It’s “study in different places”.
C. Many people forget the next rule.
