Dear Uncle John,
I apologise for not writing earlier and for causing you to be worried.
I am disappointed. I have failed my final-year exam though I studied so hard for it. Life is so unfair. Now I wonder whether it is better for me to join the working world or to repeat my studies.
Love,
Fred
Dear Fred,
I am sorry to hear what you are experiencing. But I have to be a little strict with you for your own good.
I heard from your friends that you spent a lot of time on tennis and other sports. Don't you think that may have had something to do with your failure? Your grades were already getting worse in your second year. That should have been a clear signal (信号) for you to re-look at your schedule (日程安排).
Another thing is that I know you have a habit of not getting up until 10:00 am. You are oversleeping! Have you heard of the story of The Hare and the Tortoise? It's only through consistent (始终如一的) hard work that the tortoise beats the hare.
Right now, however, I am most disappointed with you over something else. How can you even think about not repeating your final year? That would be another mistake and I will not allow you to do it.
You must forget the past and start all over again from the beginning. You have been given a second chance. You know, not everyone gets the second chance like this. Take it and show what you are really made of. If you can show such determination (决心) in sports, you can show even greater courage in your studies.
We all make mistakes in life. The biggest would be not trying to correct them.
Uncle John
