Mars is dry today. But now scientists think it had a sea and beaches—a great place for a vacation!
This new finding came from scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. They got this information from Zhurong.
Zhurong is China's first rover(探测器) on Mars. It was sent to the red planet(行星) on July 23, 2020 and arrived there in May 2021. The rover's radar(雷达) sends radio waves(无线电波) 80 metres into the ground. When these waves hit something important, they let the rover know about it.
This is how Zhurong found some foreshore(前滩) deposits(沉淀物) underground. These deposits are special because they are often made by sea tides(潮汐).
With this in mind, scientists think Mars had a large sea about 3.5 to 4 billion years ago. The sea, known as Deuteronilus, covered about half of Mars. At that time, the red planet's air was thicker and its weather was warmer. All this makes us think that there was life on Mars in the past.
