As the old saying in Xunpu, Fujian Province goes, “Put flowers in your hair this life and you'll also be pretty in the afterlife.”
In the past, all the women in the small fishing village had long hair, and they put colourful flower headdresses(头饰) on their heads. The headdress is known as zanhua or zanhuawei. In 2008, it was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage.
As a child, Huang Rongbing watched his mother, Weng Xiuzhen, comb(梳理) her long and thick hair every day. “After making a bun(圆发髻) at the back of her head, she put colourful flowers into her hair,” the 34-year-old said.
In 2016, Huang and his elder sister opened a salon(美发厅). There, visitors can get their hair styled in the Xunpu tradition and have their photos taken. Now, there are over 200 similar businesses in the centuries-old village. People flood into Xunpu for zanhua. They love matching it with Chinese-style clothes such as qipao and mamianqun.
The increase in the number of tourists brings joy to Huang. It not only keeps the business busy but also helps spread the history and culture behind the headdress.
Huang said the women of Xunpu are hard-working, warm-hearted and brave. “When they put zanhua on their heads, they express their wish for happiness,” he added.
