传统文化
The traditional Chinese Longtaitou Festival, or the Dragon-Head-Raising Festival, is on the second day of the second lunar month every year, and shows the start of spring and farming. In 2025, it is on March 1.
Ancient people believed that after this day, rainfall increases (降雨增加) because the Dragon King has woken from his winter sleep. A well-known phrase goes, “Er yue er, long tai tou,” meaning “On the second day of the second lunar month, the dragon raises his head.”
The most famous tradition on this day is getting a haircut. People believe that it can help throw away bad luck.
During the festival, foods are quite special. People eat chengYao cakes, made with rice, during the festival in Suzhou, where a saying goes, “If you eat chengYao on Longtaitou, your waist (腰) won't hurt all year.”
At the same time, other foods, like noodles, dumplings, and popcorn, get their names from dragon body parts. Noodles are dragon's beard (long xu), dumplings are dragon's ears(long er), and popcorn is dragon's seeds(long zi). These special foods' names not only make the festival more interesting, but also show people's hope for a good life.
