Water is a big part of our world. We use it every day for many things. We drink it, we wash in it, and we swim in it for exercise. But would you ever ① think of water as being something powerful?
②James Watt thought ______. Watt was a British inventor. He was born in 1736 and died in 1819. Here is a story from his childhood. One day, Watt was sitting in his grandmother's kitchen and watching the fireplace. A kettle was hanging on a string above the fire. “What makes the fire burn, Grandma?” he asked.
James' grandmother didn't listen. ③她正忙着做饭。James looked at the kettle and noticed it moving. “What's in the kettle, Grandma?” he asked.
“④Just water,” she told him.
⑤“But Grandma, there's something else ______. It's making the lid move.”
His grandmother stopped cooking and laughed. “It's steam. It's made by the water,”she said.
James Watt held onto this thought until he was older. ⑥ He realized we could use steam to move big things. His realization finally led to the invention of the steam engine which moves ships and trains.
