On Sept. 6, 2024, the Boeing Starliner spacecraft landed back on the earth. However, there were no astronauts inside. The astronauts it meant to take are still stuck(困住) in space and need a “space taxi” to bring them home. Why did this happen?
In 2014, NASA asked two companies, Boeing and SpaceX, to make a new spacecraft to take astronauts to and from the International Space Station(ISS), because NASA’s Space Shuttle(太空船), the world’s first reusable spacecraft, was being retired.
While SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft has been taking astronauts to the ISS since 2020, the Boeing Starliner spacecraft has experienced many problems since 2019.
On June 5, 2024, Starliner finally took astronauts to the space station for the first time. However, before the trip, there was a small leak (泄漏) in Starliner’s plumbing(管道系统). Boeing and NASA decided it was safe enough to fly. But as Starliner got close to the ISS, four more leaks happened and five engines(发动机) stopped working. Luckily, the astronauts safely arrived at the space station.
NASA worried that if too many engines failed again, it would be dangerous for the astronauts when they try to come back to the earth. That’s why Starliner came back empty. Now, the two astronauts have to stay at the space station and wait for SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, the “space taxi”, to bring them home.
Even with these problems, NASA still supports Boeing. “You want to have another alternative(可供选择的事物) both for cost reasons and for safety reasons… So NASA needs Boeing to be successful,” G. Scott Hubbard, a consultant (顾问) on NASA projects, explained to AP.
