Name
The canyon gets its name from the Yarlung Zangbo River. The river flows along the bottom of the canyon. In the Tibetan language, Yarlung Zangbo means “water flowing down from the top of a high mountain”.
Location
The canyon is in the south - east of Xizang. It runs along the Yarlung Zangbo River and lies under the famous Mount Namcha Barwa.
Length and depth
The canyon holds two important records: it is both the longest and deepest canyon in the world. It is 504.6 kilometres long, starting in Milin County in the north and ending in Medog County in the south. The canyon has an average depth of 2,268 metres, but its deepest point reaches 6,009 metres.
Landscape
Around the canyon there are huge snow - covered mountains. In this area, you can see waterfalls, forests, fields and beautiful flowers. However, much of the area is hard for people to get to. Some parts are still unexplored by people. Because of this, some people call it “the last secret land on earth”.
