Leonardo da Vinci, a famous Italian painter, spent more than ten years completing The Mona Lisa. He said it was one of his favourite paintings. It was so precious (珍贵的) to him that he kept it for himself until he died in 1519.
Leonardo da Vinci never revealed who the model of the painting was. Since his death, many people have tried to find out who the model was, and some people even think it is a self-portrait (自画像) of Leonardo da Vinci. One thing most Mona Lisa fans agree on is that it is her mysterious smile that makes the painting so special.
Who is the real Mona Lisa? It is a question that has puzzled historians for centuries, and now historians think they may actually be a step closer to solving the mystery of one of the world's most famous paintings. A group of experts have opened a tomb in the Italian city of Florence in the hope of finding some DNA samples (样本) which they think may hold the clue they need. The tomb is thought to contain the family of a woman called Lisa Gherardini. Historians think Lisa is buried in the nearby convent of St Ursula, where records show she died in 1542. They have recovered (复原) the bodies of three women from the convent, but they have been unable to make sure which body is Lisa's.

答案:
Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. After spending most of his early years at sea, Columbus began to believe that he could find a shortcut to the Indies by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately, the King of Portugal refused to support such a trip, and Columbus was forced to present his idea to the King and Queen of Spain. In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella agreed to pay for his trip. They gave him a crew and three ships, the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Columbus sailed aboard the Santa Maria.
The trip was long and hard. Many sailors grew restless and wanted to turn around. After about two months at sea, land was finally seen. The ships stopped on the island of Hispaniola. Columbus named the native people he saw “Indians”, because he believed he had found the shortcut he was looking for. In fact, Columbus discovered North America, a brand new continent at that time. Columbus, however, couldn't be convinced (使信服). He died with the belief that he had found the shortcut to the East Indies.
