Yang Liwei was the first man sent into space by the Chinese space programme. On 16 October 2003, when he came back to the Earth after a 21 - hour trip in space, Yang Liwei’s name was known by almost everyone and his smile was seen across the world. Shenzhou 5 made China the third country to send a person into space, after the Soviet Union and the USA.
Yang Liwei was born on 21 June 1965, in Liaoning Province, an industrial area in north - east China. In 1983, he was chosen to enter the aviation (飞行) college of the PLA Air Force. In 1987, he logged (行驶) 1,350 hours of flight time as a pilot before he went to space training.
Yang was selected as an astronaut candidate (候选人) in 1998 and was trained for the space flight from then on. He was chosen from the final pool of 13 candidates to fly on China’s first manned space mission (载人航天计划). During the trip, Yang Liwei recorded everything he saw and showed China’s national flag and the United Nations’ flag to the people all over the world.
Yang visited Hong Kong from 31 October to 5 November in 2003, holding talks and sharing his experiences. On 7 November, Yang received the title of Space Hero. He also received a badge (徽章) of honour during the ceremony at the Great Hall of the People. Yang’s experience will encourage more people to show interest in space technology and his trip is definitely a great step forward for our country.
