三、阅读理解(每小题2分,共20分)
A
The sun is shining when I get on Bus No. 151. We passengers sit crowded together in heavy clothes. No one speaks. That’s one of the unwritten rules of Chicago commuting (通勤). Although we see the same faces every day, we prefer to hide behind our newspapers. The phenomenon (现象) is striking (引人注目的): people who sit so close together are using those thin sheets of newsprint to keep their distance.
As the bus comes close to the Magnificent Mile, a voice suddenly rings out: “Attention! Attention!” Papers rattle (发出细小声). Necks crane (伸长). “This is your driver speaking.”
We look at the back of the driver’s head. His voice has authority (权威).
“All of you put your papers down.”
The papers come down, an inch at a time. The driver waits. The papers are folded and placed on our laps.
“Now, turn and face the person next to you. Go ahead.”
Amazingly, we all do it. Still, no one smiles.
I face an older woman; her head wrapped tightly in a red scarf. I see her nearly every day. Our eyes meet. We wait, unblinking (不眨眼的), for the next order from the driver.
“Now, repeat after me,” said the driver seriously. “Good morning, neighbour!”
Our voices are weak and shy. For many of us, these are the first words we have spoken today. But we say them at the same time, like schoolchildren, to the strangers beside us. We smile and can’t help it. We have said it; the barrier (障碍) has been broken. Good morning, neighbour. It is not so hard after all. Some of us repeat it. Others shake hands. Many laugh.
The bus driver says nothing more. He doesn’t need to. Not a single newspaper goes back up. I hear laughter, a warm sound I have never heard before on Bus No. 151. This day is starting off better than most.

B
My name is Wei Hua and I’m a sporting robot (机器人) of the 23rd century. I’m clever at high flying exercises. I jump from spaceships and as I fall, I turn, dive, circle and dance until I softly land as close as I can to the finishing line.
Robot competitions in the 23rd century are truly a popular sport. Fans from all over China watch their hand-held TVs when a competition comes on. Last time I took part in the 78th Olympics and I won the silver medal (银牌) for my performance.
This year I was very proud to be chosen again. I wanted to meet robots from other countries and explore ideas about our sport. However, my programmer fell ill the week before we were leaving. It was very painful for her and I felt very afraid. I didn’t feel so confident (自信的) that I would win.
The day of the competition was rather cold for my legs and my special oil began to freeze. I stopped for a moment (which I shouldn’t) before I jumped from the starting place on a little spaceship, and then I began my performance. At the correct moment I tried to open my parachute (降落伞) but there was a problem. It only opened a little. I began to fall faster and faster so that I could not turn, dive, circle or dance. My heart stopped beating as I landed heavily on a mountain covered with snow.
This is why I am writing to you from my hospital bed with two broken legs and a weak head. I did not win anything at the Olympics after all. I need the factory to build me two new legs and an even bigger head. Then I will be able to compete once more. Let’s hope for greater success in the next Olympics!
( )36. What can’t Wei Hua do in high flying exercises?
A. Dive. B. Wave. C. Dance. D. Turn.
( )37. Wei Hua came __________ in the 78th Olympics high flying sport.
A. first B. second C. third D. fourth
( )38. Why didn’t Wei Hua feel so confident about himself before this year’s game?
A. His programmer was sick.
B. He had a great pain in his leg.
C. He himself fell ill before they were leaving.
D. He couldn’t meet robots from other countries.
( )39. According to Paragraph 4, how many reasons led to Wei Hua’s failure in the competition?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
( )40. How is Wei Hua feeling now?
A. Full of hope.
B. Unsure about himself.
C. Heart-broken.
D. Pleased with his result this year.
