四、阅读理解
Tom has had a strong interest in helping ORBIS raise money since he was 4. He said that no child should ever be prevented from seeing his or her friends, parents or other family members. He wanted to help blind children in his home country and he knew the ORBIS plane was doing a great job. He learnt about their plan to build 50 eye care centres in India by 2012.
After seeing Tom’s “Celebrate Your Birthday with Charity” project, his sister, Susan, wanted to help. She knew that if you couldn’t see, you would have a hard time learning to read and write.
They started a family project to raise money to build an eye care centre in India. The centre would train doctors from poor areas to provide better eye care for children in their villages. In 2006, for his birthday, Tom asked his friends to donate to ORBIS instead of bringing presents to his party. In all, he collected $145.In 2007, Tom and Susan began their “Kids for Sight” project. This was done with the support of their teachers to educate children about taking care of their eyes and ask children to join them in helping to save the sight of other children. For their birthdays, Tom and Susan again collected and donated $530 to ORBIS. They were truly experiencing the joy of giving.
