C
If you watch a TV show without sound, can you guess what was going on? This skill of “reading” people without using words is called nonverbal (非言语) communication. It includes facial expressions, body language and more.
Facial expressions are a common way of communication. In other words, people from different backgrounds are able to know your feelings quite well by your facial expressions.
However, is it the same for body language? Take gestures (手势) as an example. While some gestures are the same in all cultures, others are different. Chinese usually hold up our index (食指) finger and middle finger to count two. But most Europeans will raise their thumb and index finger. This is because most European schools teach students to count from the thumb. In Chinese and British schools, students are taught to start with the index finger. On the other hand, the same gestures may have different meanings in different cultures. For example, the “OK” gesture means “good” in most cultures. If you show this sign to a man from Türkiye, however, he will think you are laughing at him. You may be in trouble.
Another important part of body language is touch. In some cultures, people pat their friends on the back to praise them, but in other cultures, this can be impolite. Besides, in China, shaking hands is a common way to greet and show hospitality of Chinese. In India, however, you shouldn’t shake hands with an elderly person. Instead, the best way to greet him is to touch his feet.
Generally speaking, our body language depends a lot on our culture. So, next time you decide to travel to another country, a quick search online can guide you on how to behave properly.
