Chris set the last chair and then poured himself some lem-onade(柠檬水) from the card table.
“Chris, that’s for the party,” his mother said.
“But I’m thirsty.”
“Then get yourself a drink from the fridge.”
“Why isn’t Kurt helping? It’s his party. Why am I stuck doing all the work while he’s out with his friends?” complained (抱怨) Chris.
The phone rang and Mom ran inside muttering. “That had better not be the person from the food shop with another prob-lem. That food was supposed to be here an hour ago!”
“Chris!” Dad shouted. “I need a hand with this volleyball net.” “Coming!” Chris said.
“The foods are on the way,” Mom said, “Chris, could you get another card table from the yard?” “After he helps me with this net,” Dad said. Just then, Kurt arrived home. “I’m going to take a shower.”
“Unbelievable.” Chris thought, “I’m doing all the work and he’s going to take a shower.” Chris helped his father with the volleyball net and then searched for another table. He found one but it was too heavy.
“I’ll get it.” Kurt said.
“It’s about time you did something!” Chris said a little
“What’s that about?” Kurt asked, looking hurt.
“This is your party. But I’ve been doing everything. And people are going to give you presents and money. What do I get? Nothing! I wasted my whole day setting up while you hung out with your friends!”
“You thought I was hanging out with my friends?” said Kurt. “I was working. I have to pay for college. I’ve been work-ing since five o’clock this morning.”
“Oh,” Chris said. Suddenly carrying a few tables didn’t seem so bad. “There’s still an hour before the party. Get some sleep or something.”
“You don’t mind helping with the setting up while I sleep?” Kurt asked.
“No.” Chris smiled. “Happy graduation(毕业).”
