On June 5th, a short video platform in China gave the
“2024 Intangible Cultural Heritage( 非物质文化遗产 ) Data Re-
port”. The report shows the fact that the number of short vide-
os about intangible cultural heritage(ICH) has increased by
39% in the past year. Surprisingly, most of these short videos
are created by young people between 20 and 30.
Have you ever heard of Qingshen Bamboo Weaving? It’s
an amazing ICH skill. The craftsperson( 手 艺 人 ) makes a
special kind of bamboo strips( 竹丝 ) as thin as hair and then
weaves( 编 织 ) them into artworks and paintings. Since the
process was so difficult that few people would like to learn it,
Qingshen Bamboo Weaving was once in danger. However,
young people create short videos to show the process and tell
the stories about it. The videos draw lots of attention to this old
skill. “Young people also introduce these unknown ICH skills
in a more creative way,” as stated in the report. They interview
the ICH inheritors( 传 承 人 ), make a copy of some ICH works.
With their effort, these skills become hot topics on the
Internet.
However, what young people want to do is more than
these. According to the report, the number of ICH inheritors
has increased by 72%. Among them, 199 inheritors are under
30. It means young people are becoming the main force of inher-
iting ICH skills. Besides, these young people also hope to bring
new chances to their hometowns by sharing short videos online.
For example, with the spread of short videos about Yingge
Dance, an ICH art performance, the Chaoshan area in Guang-
dong Province has become a popular place to visit in the Spring
Festival.
“Intangible cultural heritage is not a cultural relic( 遗 产 ),
but a part of our lives,” says Jiang Qianxun, a young inheritor.
“We hope that we can bring ICH skills on a new stage for more
people to admire. We also wish to bring traditional culture back
to life. ”
