When I was young, I was interested in Chinese movies because I wanted to know more about Chinese culture like kung fu and *xiqu*. I often dreamed to go to China one day.
Luckily, when I was learning theatre arts at university (大学), I got a chance to study abroad. There was a programme study about Asian theatre arts either in China or in India. I decided to go to China and learn Beijing Opera in a Chinese theatre school. The school gave me a place to practise. It was good because I could practise whenever I wanted. Also I had personal lessons—the teacher would give me one-to-one classes for three hours. That was the best part of my study in China. I feel very thankful to have this chance to learn the beautiful art!
I got a lot from my study in China. It has greatly helped me develop into a better actor. This Chinese art gives me a lot of ways, so I can use them when I perform other shows in Europe. I have set up an art centre to teach Beijing Opera.
