About a year ago, I stayed at a hotel. I didn't want to take too much money with me, so I asked the desk clerk to put a hundred-dollar bill in the safe(保险柜) for me. The next morning, the clerk said that he knew nothing about my money. I did not have any proof (证据)that I had given the man the money. There was nothing left to do but go to the nearest lawyer. The lawyer advised me to return to the hotel with him and give another hundred-dollar bill to the clerk. So we did. An hour later, I went back to the desk and asked for my money. Since I had the lawyer as an eyewitness(目击者,目击证人) to the second hundred-dollar bill, the clerk could not say he knew nothing about it.
Another hour later, both the lawyer and I went to the hotel to search for the hundred-dollar bill once again. When the clerk insisted(坚持) he had given it to me, I said it was not true. The lawyer said to him, “I saw the gentleman gave you a hundred dollars. If you don't hand it in right now, I will have to call the police.” The clerk had nothing to do but give me back another hundred-dollar bill.
“I don't know how to thank you for getting my money back,” I said to the lawyer.
He said, “Oh, it doesn't matter. Just pay me one hundred dollars for my work, please.”
