Through the world, women play an important role in environmental protection. And in China, there is a large group of females taking part in protecting the environment. Yin Yuzhen is one of them.
She is a national heroine for fighting sandstorms in the desert of Inner Mongolia. When Yin arrived in the desert after she was married, she was scared by the wild conditions. But at last, she decided to do something to make the environment around better. Fifteen years later, her dreams have come true. Together with her husband, she has planted more than 300, 000 trees to stop the sand moving towards their village. At the same time, she tried her best to keep her village out of poverty and to help them live a better life. In 2002, Yin Yuzhen received the China Environment Prize, the top honor in China for those who have made significant contributions to environmental protection in the country.
She said, “What I have done is just like a drop of water in the ocean. I would like to continue to plant trees for the rest of my life. My only wish is to turn the whole desert into an oasis.”
