Sam had a problem. It seemed so easy for his classmate Jack to be first in the class. Although Sam tried his best, he was only in about 20th place in his class. "Why is Jack always better than me?" he often wondered.
At home, he asked his mother, "Mom, am I stupid(愚蠢的)? I'm as hard - working as Jack and I listen to the teachers just like he does. Why is he always better than me?" Hearing this, his mother didn't know what to say. She knew that her son really tried his best.
After another test, Sam was in seventeenth place, a little better than before. But Jack still came in first. When Sam asked his mother the same questions, the mother said nothing. But she decided to take Sam to the beach.
On the beach, there were many birds eating food. The mother said to Sam, "Look at those bullfinches(红腹灰雀)! When there is a wave, they can fly up very quickly to the sky. The seagulls(海鸥) look kind of stupid—it takes them a little longer to fly up from the beach to the sky. But the seagulls can really fly across the oceans (大洋)."
After hearing his mother's words, Sam kept working hard and didn't care about his grades too much. Just last year, he got into the best university in his country with the best grade in his school.
