When the Dragon Boat Festival comes, many Chinese like to watch or take part in dragon boat races. They are fun and exciting. However,in a small village in Fuzhou, people are busy making dragon boats instead of rowing them during the festival.
Fangzhuang, known as the "Dragon Boat Village",has a history of more than 700 years of boat-making. It is the biggest dragon boat-making place in China. There are four main factories in the village, including Fang Shaohuang's.
Fang Shaohuang,a 72-year-old man,has a boat-making factory in Fangzhuang. He began to learn the skill 58 years ago. It is not easy to build a dragon boat because workers need to use many tools and finish all the work by hand, from carving to painting.
"The materials for making the boat are crucial," Fang said. "We often choose trees over 40 years old. And the wood must be hard and waterproof(防水的),or the boat can't be used for a long time."
In Fang's factory, the boats are 18 metres long, and each of them can carry as many as 34 people. It usually takes one worker over 20 days to complete a boat. This year, the four main factories in Fangzhuang made about 200 boats before the festival.
Besides making boats, the factory also welcomes visitors. A number of primary school students and college students come to learn about the traditional boat-making skills. "My nephew(侄子) says he hopes to build a hall for showing our boats so that more young people are able to know the dragon boat culture," Fang said.
