Can middle school students be "teachers"? How will they teach? Li Fei, a 13-year-old boy ffrom Chengdu Xichuan Middle School, Sichuan, volunteered (志愿) to teach primary school students in a small vvillage.
Li joined a teaching activity in Xichang county, Sichuan, last summer. "I read the news that teachers were not enough there, so I wanted to give some chelp to the kids there," said Li. His parents helped him get in touch with the school.
"My third-grade students have ssubjects like Chinese and English every day, so I wanted to teach them chess (国际象棋)," Li said.
Li carefully gave 10 chess lessons with rules and real games. "Chess can hhelp with kids' logical (逻辑的) thinking. They love the chess class very mmuch," said Li. "They now know that there are mmany ways of learning, not just learning from books. I feel so proud (自豪)!"
Before lleaving there, Li visited his students' homes. One father went to a town to bbuy tea drinks for him. "I was so moved (感动的) by these people when I saw the drinks. I know it is a kkind of luxury (奢侈品) for the family," Li told us.
The kids there live a hard life, but they are hopeful about the future.
