Marcus got up from his desk and slowly looked outside toward the playground. Kids were laughing, and having fun. He wanted to join them.
Last week, the bad kids caused a lot of 11 for Marcus and his friends. They stole their kickball, knocked over the chairs and laughed at them.
Marcus’s teacher, Ms Black, a teacher with a loving heart, came up to him. “Don’t you want to go out?” she asked. Marcus hesitated( 犹豫), then 12 . Ms Black opened the door with one hand and 13 led him outside with the other.
Ned and Malik were already on the swing( 秋千) set. Out of the corner of his 14 , Marcus noticed the bad kids moving toward them. The bigger one, Hitch, was laughing.
Marcus wasn’t on the swings for five minutes when he noticed someone standing 15 him. He turned around to see Hitch standing with his arms crossed.
“It’s my turn,” 16 Hitch.
“But we just got on,” Malik said.
The other bad kid, Evan, yelled, “Well, now it’s our time to play!” and pulled the swing to a stop.
Ned and Malik got 17 . Marcus saw Hitch and Evan playing crazily on the swings, laughing all the while.
“That’s it,” he thought. “I’ve had enough.”
Marcus felt angry. A 18 voice that he didn’t even recognize( 辨别出) came out of his mouth.
“No, Hitch!” Marcus shouted. “We were here first. You and Evan can use the swings 19 we finish.”
The playground got 20 as some kids looked up.
Marcus stood still and tall. Ms Black looked out of the classroom window, watching carefully.
Hitch and Evan looked at each other in 21 , then at Marcus. Hitch took a step back.
“Who cares? Let’s go play kickball 22 ,” said Hitch, quickly walking away. Evan kicked his foot in the sand, then 23 Hitch.
Seeing the bad kids going away together, Malik ran over to Marcus and high-fived him. Ned said, “Wow! Marcus, that was amazing! Now let’s see who can swing the highest!”
Marcus acted as if it were nothing but felt his face go red. He was just 24 to be able to play with his friends during the break.
When the break ended, they walked back into the classroom. Ms Black faced Marcus and put her hand softly on his shoulder.
“I saw that, Marcus. It was very 25 of you to say no to the bullies( 霸凌者) and stand up for yourself and your friends,” she said. “You should be proud of yourself.”
Marcus smiled quickly to himself and took a seat at his desk.
