C
More than twenty - five hundred years ago, life in ancient China was very hard. States were often at war with each other. Most of the people were hopelessly poor. But it was also a time in Chinese history when there were many great men. Among them was one of the greatest men. He was Confucius.
Confucius didn’t come from a rich family. His father died when Confucius was only three years old. The boy grew up to be very tall and strong but he was quiet, thoughtful, and studious. And he became learned when he was only twenty years old. As Confucius saw the people around him living a terrible life, he became eager to help them. At last he left his family.
He wandered many states to spread his thought but these states were busy with wars. They did not like what he said. He devoted to the education since he was young. He told his students to be honest and kind, and to honor their parents. He taught them that a good man never lets himself get angry. Many of his sayings were gathered together and written down. One of his famous sayings is “Do not do to others what you do not wish others to do to you.”
For years he wandered from state to state spreading his ideas to all who would listen to him. No country would like to ask him to come into power. He had to come back to his hometown when he was sixty eight. Only five years later, the greatest Chinese thinker passed away.
