Living in a “Hot Pot”—What's That Like?
Hey kids! Have you ever felt like you're inside a hot pot? Some people in Southeast Asia (东南亚) feel that way because of the extreme(极端的) heat(高温天气). In May,countries like Thailand and the Philippines reach temperatures as high as 50℃ (122℉)!
We all know summers can be warm, but why is it so hot in Southeast Asia now? There are two main reasons. First,it is global warming(全球变暖). The Earth is getting hotter because of pollution(污染). Second, there's something called El Niño,a weather pattern(模式) that brings warm ocean(海洋) water, making the air even hotter.
An 11–year–old student from Cambodia,Sek Seila, told CNN:“On very hot days,it feels like your skin is burning (燃烧)!” Too much heat can make people dizzy(眩晕的),or sick(生病的). In the worst cases,it can be deadly(致死的).
When it's this hot, everyday life changes a lot. Schools may close if they don't have air conditioners(空调). Fish can die(死) in hot water,so there may be less seafood. Vegetables become more expensive because heat stops them from growing well. Farmers struggle(苦苦挣扎) because crops(庄稼) can get damaged(受损的).
Rich people can stay cool with air conditioners, but others find simple ways to beat(击败) the heat. Some paint their roofs (屋顶) white to reflect (反射) sunlight. Others wear light–colored clothes, drink more water, and take cool showers.
Now you know what it's like to live in a “hot pot”!
