Growing up, we’re always taught to believe what’s inside a person is more important than what’s on the outside.
But whether we like to accept it or not, most of us dislike at least one thing about our body. From the shape of our nose to our height, there’s always something everyone wishes was different about themselves. And for some people, the way they look can even take over their whole life.
“I’m 16 years old, and every time I look in the mirror, I have an ongoing battle(斗争) with myself. ” US high school student Raasch said.
Raasch certainly isn’t alone. In fact, according to a survey carried out by Psychology Today, 89 percent of US women are dissatisfied with their appearance(外貌). The survey found that most of the women thought they weighed too much or weren’t pretty enough. Even more surprisingly, 15 percent of those women said they would give up five years of their life if they could be thinner.
Body image(形象) is normally something that we care most. So, if you’re one of those many people who aren’t pleased with your body image, what can you do to help yourself?
Reducing the time you spend on social media could be a good start.
“If you get a lot of likes on a picture, it makes you feel happy. ” an unnamed teenage girl told BBC News. “But if you don’t get a huge amount, ” she added, “you can feel down about yourself. ”
Meanwhile, thinking about the things we like about our body could help us to feel more positive about ourselves. “Spend time every day on what you love about your body, ” confidence coach Misik wrote. “You have a choice: feel bad about your body or love and accept it fully. ”
Indeed, learning to accept who we are is the best way to get over body image problems. And as we grow older, we begin to care less about our appearance and gradually realize that there are more important things in life than looks. No matter how beautiful or ugly you think you are, your life has value.
