四、阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
A
Jumping into the Jaw of the Bear
Once a year, brown bears come to the river to eat salmon (鲑鱼). The salmon are swimming upstream(逆流). They need to jump high out of the water to get over things like waterfalls. This makes hunting much easier for the bears. A skilled bear can eat more than 30 salmon a day in this way.
Wildlife workers checked the bodies of almost 200 pilot whales (领航鲸) at Macquarie Heads, Tasmania, Australia. People found them stranded (搁浅) the day before. Workers tried to save them, but only around 35 lived. Pilot whales are known for stranding in large numbers. And this part of Tasmania's coast is a “whale trap(陷阱)”. Whales get confused(困惑的) by the natural conditions there.

Last week I visited my friend Pete in the new home where he lives with his wife and daughter. Pete used to spend his holidays traveling around the world, visiting the pyramids(金字塔) in Egypt or scuba diving(水肺潜水) in the Caribbean. Nowadays he prefers to spend his holidays and weekends making his house look more beautiful. Like hundreds of thousands of other British people, he has discovered the joy of DIY, which means there are many things that need fixing around the house, and he will try to do jobs himself.
As he showed me the new kitchen he put together by himself and the newly painted walls, I asked Pete where he got his inspiration. He told me that his favorite source of ideas was a DIY TV program.
This got me thinking about the great popularity of DIY programs in the UK. Each main channel has at least one home or garden improving show and there's even a satellite channel completely about the subject.
I guess it is not really surprising that DIY programs are so popular. Two common sayings in Britain “An Englishman's home is his castle.” and “There's no place like home.” — show how important our houses are to us. With the present economic downturn, many people can't afford to buy a big house so they are looking at how they can make their houses better without spending a lot of money. ★.
But be careful! I read a report that said over 230,000 people got injured while doing home improvements in the UK in just one year, including 41,000 who fell off ladders and 5,800 who were seriously hurt by hammers. So I won't be going down to the hardware store.
56. Pete spent his holidays nowadays by ________.
A. visiting his friends B. diving
C. traveling around the world D. making his house beautiful
57. Which might NOT be shown in a DIY program on TV?
A. A garden improving feature. B. Home improvements.
C. Building a house. D. Fixing things in kitchens.
58. There are some reasons why DIY is popular in UK except that ________.
A. the present economic becomes worse
B. people like watching DIY programs
C. houses can be improved with less money
D. people hope for a better home
59. Which of the following can be put in ★?
A. DIY is the perfect choice B. Everybody wants to save money
C. TV programs work a lot D. Start renewing your house now
60. In the last paragraph, the writer tells us ________.
A. to be careful during DIY B. not to go to hardware store
C. to keep watching DIY programs D. not to climb ladders or use hammers
C
It was an exciting day as I first entered the classroom for my first lesson in the USA. My heart was beating very hard when the professor asked everyone to introduce themselves. I was very anxious and did not hear anyone else's introduction. I buried myself in what I was going to say.
Classes went on and I noticed my American classmates were very active in class. My unwillingness to speak during class started to worry me when I realized that I was ignored(忽视) in class. But I did not give up. One simple way I broke down this fear of speaking was to arrive 10 to 15 minutes earlier at the classroom. It gave me time to be ready for class discussions.
The person whom I feared most was the professor. So I found every chance to speak with him before and after class. When I did not have the chance to talk with the professor in class, I wrote an email or made a date with him outside the class with questions I had. These were very effective ways to help me speak freely in class! Since the chance of expressing myself in class was limited, I finished all of my reading and writing tasks before class. One time, the professor asked a question about the reading homework. The whole class was silent and I suddenly raised my hand and answered it perfectly! That moment I set the world on fire.
Once I started joining in class, I realized how valuable it was. Class discussion was the best way to learn and remember things. It also made class a living and enjoyable experience. Taking part in class discussion was also like climbing a ladder. I often prepared very simple questions to use at the beginning of class. Once I started to speak, it was easier to speak up more. Classroom is the place to learn, so no one would consider you as a fool even if you put forward simple questions in class.
61. Why did the writer's heart beat very hard when the professor asked everyone to introduce themselves?
A. Because the writer feared the professor.
B. Because the writer was afraid of speaking in class.
C. Because the writer's classmates were too active in class.
D. Because the writer was ignored in class.
62. Which is NOT right about how the writer overcame the fear of the professor?
A. Finding chances to talk with him.
B. Writing emails to the professor.
C. Asking questions outside the class.
D. Finishing all his homework.
63. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The professor was good at teaching.
B. The writer may come from another country.
C. Class discussion was not necessary.
D. The writer only asked simple questions.
64. What does the underlined sentence “I set the world on fire” mean?
A. All people were angry.
B. The classroom was burned.
C. The writer made the class surprised.
D. The writer became popular.
65. The best title for the passage may be “________”.
A. Speak Up in Classroom Discussion
B. Talk More Often with Teachers
C. Start with Simple Questions
D. Try to Make a Great Difference
