Many years ago, China was in the middle of a great war(战争). The emperor said that one man from each family must join the army. Mulan, a teenage girl, heard the news when she was washing clothes outside.
Mulan ran into the house. Her father was sitting in a chair, working on a piece of wood. “Father, did you know what the emperor said?” she asked. “Yes. I will go to pack up(收拾行李),” said her old father. He put down the wood, stood up and walked slowly to his room.
“Wait! Father, you are too old to keep up with others.” said Mulan.
“What else can I do? Your brother is a child. He can't go,” said Father.
“I have a(n) idea,” Mulan said and went into her father's room. With his sword(剑), she cut off her long black hair. She put on her father's clothes and went back to him. “Look at me. I am your son now. I will go in your place.”
“No, my daughter!” said the old man. “You can't do this!”
“Father, for years, you taught me how to use a sword. Now it's time for me to put it into practice.” said Mulan.
Mulan said goodbye to her father. “I miss you, Father,” she said. “Take good care of yourself.” She climbed on a horse and went to the army.
