I grew up in the countryside. I didn’t know what it brought to me until I grew up. It helped me learn more practical skills than children who grew up in cities.
I learned to cook at around 10 years old. The first skill I learned was making dough(面团). In my hometown of Ningxia, people make noodles from the start of the evening. As my parents often came home late, a prepared dough would help my family have dinner sooner. I thought it would be easy because I often saw my mum do it — just add water to flour(面粉), right? Not quite! First, I made the dough too soft. Then, I made it too hard. But as I kept trying, I learned the trick.
Later, I cooked fried(油炸的) dishes and things like dumplings. I loved cooking. It’s a good way to relax. Thanks to my cooking skills, I live a better life when I need to work far from home. I cook every meal instead of ordering takeaways. It saves money. Three meals a day mean a lot of money for a person like me who just begins to work.
This may be why I’m so happy to know that students now have labour education(劳动教育) at school in China. These practical skills will help them for the rest of their lives.
