Family life in the UK can be very varied (多种多样的). People from many different cultures live in the UK so families can be big or small. They can live in big houses with large gardens or in very small apartments (公寓) with no gardens at all.
A typical (典型的) British boy or girl lives in a house in a town with their mum and dad, and one or two brothers or sisters. Pets are very popular in the UK so many homes will also have a cat or dog, which is treated like part of the family.
Grandparents sometimes live with their family or often live close by. This means that the family can meet up easily to have meals together or visit one another when they need help. Many grandparents look after their grandchildren and help with childcare while parents go to work.
Let's imagine a typical day in the life of a British schoolboy. His name is Jack and he lives with his mum, dad and younger sister, Emma. Jack is 9 years old and Emma is 7. They have a pet dog called Max.
It's Thursday morning—a school day. At about 7:30 a.m., Jack and Emma's mum puts her head around the bedroom door and tells them it's time to wake up and get ready for school. If Mum and Dad are lucky, Jack and Emma will jump out of bed straight away. If not, they will let Max into the room to lick their faces to wake them up. Max is always pleased to see them!
After they have been to the toilet and have a wash, Jack and Emma head downstairs for breakfast. They have toast (吐司) and breakfast cereal (麦片). Dad is already dressed for work. He works in an office as a town planner. Mum is dressed for work too. She works in a school.
After breakfast, Mum and Dad help the children get dressed. The children take a packed lunch to school, which Mum and Dad make for them before they leave for work. They are also given some pocket money to buy some sweets as a treat at lunchtime.
Dad leaves for work because he has to catch a train to get to his office. Jack and Emma give him a hug before he leaves. Mum drives the children to school and drops them off in a street nearby so they can walk the rest of the way—it gets very crowded at the school gates in the morning.
Jack and Emma enjoy school because they can play with their friends, and they like learning. Jack especially enjoys playing football at lunchtime, and Emma likes painting pictures.
After school, the children are met by their grandmother at the school gates. Jack and Emma call her “Nana” for short. They walk back to Nana's house and have some tea before Mum drives round to collect them. At Nana's house, they watch television for a little while or maybe for a treat they can play games.
When they get home, the family eat an evening meal. The children then finish any homework they have, and if the weather is good they will join Dad as he takes Max for a walk.
Finally, if they've well behaved and all the homework is finished, they may be allowed to play some video games before bedtime.
By 9 o'clock, Jack and Emma are in their pyjamas (睡衣) and tucked up (盖好被子) in bed. Mum and Dad are reading them bedtime stories. Jack and Emma like magical adventure stories, so there are lots of good ones to choose from.
Tomorrow is Friday, and they can start to look forward to the weekend! Mum and Dad will take them to the swimming baths on Saturday morning, and they will have lots of time to do fun things they enjoy, like playing football in the garden with Max.
36. Why is family life in the UK varied? Because people living in the UK are from different
37. A typical British family usually includes (包括)
38. A lot of people say that the British grandparents don't often help with childcare and they don't have close family ties. Do you think it is True or Not? Why?
